Laptops are one of the few categories where the calendar is genuinely predictable, because the price of a model is driven less by the season than by what is replacing it.
The cycle
- New ranges land in spring and again in early autumn, following the main chip announcements.
- Prices for the outgoing model fall hardest in the eight weeks after a replacement is announced.
- Back-to-school weeks discount mid-range configurations rather than the top of the line.
- November cuts are broad but often shallower than a well-timed model-changeover clearance.
Last year's model is usually the buy
The year-on-year jump in a mainstream laptop is rarely dramatic, while the price gap between the outgoing and incoming model can be substantial. If you are not chasing the newest chip, the outgoing model in clearance is where the value sits.
The exception is a genuine platform change — a new architecture or a major efficiency jump — where the older machine ages faster than its discount justifies. Those happen every few years, not every year.
The mistake is buying a laptop the week it launches because that is when you happened to read about it.
Configurations matter more than the model
Memory and storage variants of the same laptop are effectively different products with different price histories. The mid configuration is frequently discounted hardest, because the entry model is a loss leader and the top one sells to people who do not compare.
